Politicians will govern better when they change key laws so they are required to govern better

Your editorial is right that politicians need to make a “commitment to govern better” as a step toward rebuilding the trust of voters (Rebuilding trust after a year of scandal: Editorial – Jan. 6).

However, this alone will not be enough because for 20 years surveys have shown clearly that a large majority of Canadian voters want changes to require everyone in politics to act honestly, openly, ethically, representatively and to prevent waste.

Key, workable changes have been proposed in bills introduced by a few democratic politicians, or set out in detail in reports by groups like Democracy Watch.

All that is needed is for legislatures to listen to voters (finally) and make these proposals the law of the land, and then voters will have a good reason to trust governments again.

Sincerely,
Duff Conacher, founding board member of Democracy Watch
