{"id":13444,"date":"2021-09-14T16:16:43","date_gmt":"2021-09-14T20:16:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/democracywatch.ca\/?p=13444"},"modified":"2025-05-25T07:15:32","modified_gmt":"2025-05-25T11:15:32","slug":"backgrounder","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/democracywatch.ca\/fr\/backgrounder\/","title":{"rendered":"BACKGROUNDERBACKGROUNDER"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 align=\"center\">Backgrounder on how a majority in Parliament clearly supported the Trudeau government, and clearly opposed Prime Minister Trudeau\u2019s snap election call<\/h2>\n<h3 align=\"center\">(September 15, 2021)<\/h3>\n<ol>\n \t<li>Prime Minister Trudeau and <span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ourcommons.ca\/members\/en\/votes\/43\/2\/118\" rel=\"noopener\">almost all MPs<\/a><\/span> in the House of Commons, including all Liberals, <span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ipolitics.ca\/2021\/05\/25\/all-parties-support-motion-against-holding-a-pandemic-election\/\" rel=\"noopener\">voted at the end of May against holding an election<\/a><\/span> while COVID is still a danger, which it <span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/8182724\/covid-canada-4th-wave-fears-poll\/\" rel=\"noopener\">clearly is<\/a><\/span>.<\/li>\n \t<li>All opposition leaders opposed holding an election.  <span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/politics\/federal\/2021\/07\/28\/say-no-if-justin-trudeau-asks-for-an-election-jagmeet-singh-tells-new-governor-general.html\" rel=\"noopener\">NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh<\/a><\/span> on July 27th, and the <span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/elizabethmaymp.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/GovernorGeneralMSimon_GreenCaucus_July2021.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\">Green Party caucus<\/a><\/span> on July 29th, wrote to Governor General Mary Simon calling on her to say no if Trudeau requested that an election being called because the government clearly had the confidence of Parliament, and an election would increase the risk to Canadians because of COVID.<\/li>\n \t<li>Conservative Party leader <span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/politics\/otoole-rush-election-1.6135011\" rel=\"noopener\">Erin O\u2019Toole said<\/a><\/span> on August 9th, before the election call that \u201cMy biggest concern right now is the potential fourth wave of COVID-19.
